Music in Melrose, running since 2006, has become one of the best open mikes in the area. Held once a month (usually the second Thursday), performers are treated to a friendly, supportive audience in an intimate setting. Any type of acoustic (or light electric) music is welcome. The event is co-hosted by Janet Feld and Howie Newman , who both perform short sets. Admission is just $3 and that includes free refreshments and a free CD raffle. In addition to the open mike, there is a 30-minute feature set by a professional musician. Feature acts have included the likes of Geoff Bartley, Stephanie Corby, Peter Donnelly and Lenny Solomon. Although most performers tend to be singer-songwriters, Music in Melrose features a wide array of music acts. "We've had a barbershop quartet, a woman who plays medieval instruments, a jazz pianist and a cappella singers," said Newman. "We've had high school kids, retirees and everything in between. We love the variety." Many local musicians have made their performing debuts at the open mike. "It's a very appreciative audience," Newman said. "Janet and I also try to make things as relaxed as possible. It's a great environment for beginners as well as seasoned performers. And we get a lot of people who just come down to listen." Music in Melrose also hosts an annual Helping Our Neighbors Concert to benefit Bread of Life, a local food pantry. More than $1,300 has been raised in the past two years to help provide food for needy families. |
